Curcumin and the Turmeric have been investigated numerous times in relation to a myriad of diseases and disorders. In 2012, a small study by the chief physician Nozomi Hishikawa et al at the Kariya Toyota Hospital Department of Neurology looked at the effects of Turmeric on Alzheimer’s disease. Although a small investigation, with only three case studies, the findings were remarkable. In one case study an 83 year old woman had progressive dementia, she became incontinent with a loss of short term memory. She also started to become disorientated and would often get lost. She also had difficulty with self care including getting dressed.

After 12 months on a regime of Turmeric, the woman began to start recognising family members, enjoying old television programs and began her old habit of knitting again. The other two case studies which had similar levels of dementia involved an 84 year old woman and a 79 year old man with similar results to the first case. It is believed that a combination of Curcumin and Vitamin D3 dissolves the amyloid plaques found in people with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Other studies have looked at the incidence rates around the world for the prevalence of Alzheimer’s and have found India to have the lowest incidence of Alzheimer’s with a quarter of that of the West. India also happens to be one of the biggest consumers of Curcumin.
Jan Frank PHD, University of Hohenheim Germany has also conducted research involving Curcumin ad Alzheimer’s also with positive results.
